Rich Notification UX

Rich Notification UX
Rich Notification user experience screens and actions

A Gear user can get to a specific notification (either an Android™ notification or a rich notification) via the following methods:

NOTE: Most navigation described in this section applies to both rich notifications and Android notifications. Exceptions are noted. The UI screens present rich notifications.

Responding to Receiving a Notification

Upon receiving a rich notification, what the Gear device UI does depends on whether the UI screen is in active or sleep mode. The UI response to receiving a rich notification depends on whether and what type of alert and/or popup is specified in the notification (setAlertType), and whether the UI display is in sleep or active mode.

  • No alert or popup type specified:
    • The Gear device does not respond to the receipt of the notification.
    • If required user can activate the UI display, and then navigate from the Gear Home screen to the notification in the Notification Board.
  • Alert type only specified:
    • The Gear device responds with an audible sound and/or vibration, as specified in the notification and supported by the device.
    • If required user can activate the UI display, and then navigate from the Gear Home screen to the notification in the Notification Board.
  • Popup type only specified:
    • When the screen is off, the Gear device responds by briefly displaying the RN Receipt Splash screen.
    • When the screen is on, the Gear device responds by briefly displaying the RN Receipt Splash screen and then displaying the RN Notification Screen.
    • The user can open the rich notification by tapping the Notification Screen.
  • Alert and popup type specified:
    • The Gear device responds with an audible sound and/or vibration, as specified in the notification and supported by the device, briefly displaying the RN Receipt Splash screen, and then displays the RN Notification Screen.
    • The user can open the rich notification by tapping the Notification Screen.

Navigating Notifications via the Notification Board

The Gear device Notification Board contains all Android™ notifications and rich notifications received by the remote device. The end user can review and use all notifications. The end user can use Gear Manager to manage all rich notifications and Android notifications that have been converted and sent via the RN Manager.

Gear device users can navigate among all the received rich notifications that are currently stored in the Gear device (up to 50 rich notifications per Android app). In the RN board, rich notifications from each different sender app are grouped in vertical columns.

Navigating Among Different Sender Apps

Swiping left and right navigates between the notifications from different sender apps (Android and rich notifications). The Sender App Home Screen displays the notification icon and title, timestamp, and initial body text of the latest notification from each sender app. The sender app groups are ordered based on the sender apps' latest notification: from the most recent notification to the earliest notification (right to left from the Gear Home screen).
