Add Gear App Binary Files and Set Distribution Devices

For  your Gear apps and Gear watch face apps, how to register binary files and set distribution devices that users can download your apps from.

Register Binary Files

A Gear app (such as a news or health monitoring app) or a Gear watch face app based on the Tizen platform can be either:

  • Standalone Gear app: runs on a Gear device, and operates independently of other apps,  and does not need a host app.
  • Companion Gear app: runs on a Gear device, communicates and interacts with a host app running on an Android device.

Binary files determine the type of Gear app.  After registering a Gear app, you can change the app type by deleting all of its registered binary files of one app type and then adding new binary files of the other app type. You cannot add binary files of different app types to the same app. Changing the Gear app type changes the device compatibility information. For more details, see Gear Application Types.

Gear watch face apps can also be generated by the Gear Watch Face Design tool.  These apps are standalone.

In order to add a Gear binary file, ensure they meet the following requirements:

  • Filenames must be unique among all binary files registered to the app.
  • Filenames must not contain spaces or special characters; however, they can contain underscores.
  • For more binary file requirements, see Application Binary Files.

Set Distribution Devices

You can control which users can download your app. Your app will not be available for download to users who do not have a distribution device that you specify. When a user does have a distribution device, whether or not they can download your app is also controlled by other factors (including whether the user is in a distribution country that you selected).

You can select your app's distribution devices from among all devices that are compatible with your app's binary files. Different binary files can be compatible with different devices. Device compatibility is determined by the features supported by a device and the Gear resolution settings you specified for a binary file.

After registering one or more binary files, all compatible devices are listed and selected (checkmarked). At any time, you can unselect and reselect devices for each registered binary file.

You can also determine which features of non-compatible devices are supported and not supported by your registered binary files.

To manage the distribution devices for each binary file
